Shin Splints

‘Shin splints’ refer to pain in the lower leg bone that is caused by repetitive overloading of the muscles attaching to the shinbone during walking or exercise. The injury is common in people who exercise regularly such as athletes and dancers or have poor foot mechanics.

Lower limb biomechanics play a large role in the loading of muscles in the lower limb, poor foot mechanics places you at high risk of developing injuries such as shin splints. Flat feet are a classic example of poor foot mechanics, fortunately flat feet can be treated easily and should not prevent anyone from doing the things they enjoy.

Treatment for shin splints will centre around reducing the workload of damaged muscles through orthotics or a change in footwear. In addition you will be given a series of stretching and strengthening exercises to prevent the problem re-occurring.
